Treasury Service
Did you know that the United States Department of Treasury offers free electronic tax payment service?
The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), offers two payment methods for individual and business tax payments: EFTPS-Online or EFTPS-Phone. Both online and phone EFTPS are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
All of your information can be quickly entered online or by phone. Users can easily verify the accuracy of their information and verify payments. An Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) acknowledgement number is provided with every payment and a history is kept of your payments made in the last 120 days.
You can schedule tax payments up to 365 days in advance with the EFTPS payment scheduling feature, which guarantees on-time, worry-free payments. EFTPS payment scheduling is especially useful for 1040ES (estimated tax) payments that are due quarterly. Scheduled payments can also be cancelled up to two business days in advance.
How does it work?
- At least one calendar day prior to your tax due date and before 8:00 p.m. ET, you access your EFTPS online or by phone. The system will prompt you for the necessary information to complete your tax payment.
- The system processes the information reported and provides an “EFT Acknowledgement Number” that you should keep for your records.
- After your tax payment is accepted, EFTPS will initiate a debit transaction against your designated account on the date you indicated.
- The funds will be transferred to the Treasury’s account and tax data will be reported to the IRS.
